Description

The is a combination of my narrowband data from previous images and the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) data downloaded from the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes Portal. The interesting part of this is that it is false color. That is, there were several filter sets available, but not the normal RGB ones we use down here on earth. For this image I assigned the filters as follows: 960 nm = Red, 752 nm = Green and 480 nm = Blue. Interestingly, it almost looks like a natural color image.

The MAST data produced the dense star field with a slight outline of the Crescent Nebula in a pale green. The addition of my H-alpha added the traditional red that we know as the emission nebula and the O3 added a touch of blue, similar to that element's emission.

If you are interested, this data sets and many, many others can be found at the following URL (https://mast.stsci.edu/portal/Mashup/Clients/Mast/Portal.html). I searched "Crescent Nebula" and selected the four overlapping panels that bracketed the heart of the Lagoon Nebula. After processing each panel, I made a mosaic. This image is just a small portion of that mosaic.

If you want to try processing some of this data, have fun. :-)
